BAFTA 2016 Nominations

The 6000 BAFTA members have voted and the results are now in. The 2016 BAFTA nominations have arrived, with Bridge Of Spies and Carol dominating the list at nine apiece. The Revenant is just behind with eight; Mad Max: Fury Road has seven (all technical); The Martian and Brooklyn both manage six; and there are strong showings fromThe Big Short, The Danish Girl and Ex Machina with five each.

It's a good year for Alicia Vikander, nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl and Ex Machinarespectively. In the former category she'll be fighting off competition from Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Maggie Smith (THe Lady In The Van) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn), while in the latter she battles Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight; also up for Best Original Screenplay and Best Score), Julie Walters (Brooklyn), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) and Rooney Mara (Carol).

Trumbo gets its only nomination in the Best Actor category, with Bryan Cranston in the frame. He's up against Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant). And while Tom Hanks missed out there, Mark Rylance, of course, gets a Best Supporting Actor nod for Bridge Of Spies, alongside Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Idris Elba (Beasts Of No Nation's only nom), Christian Bale (The Big Short) and Benicio Del Toro (Sicario).

Anchorman's Adam McKay is suddenly in more heavyweight company with his director nomination for The Big Short. He gets to stand alongside Steven Spielberg (Bridge Of Spies), Todd Haynes (Carol), Ridley Scott (The Martian) and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (The Revenant).

And these being British awards, there's obviously special attention for the home-grown. In the Outstanding British Film category Ex Machina,45 Years, The Lobster, Amy, Brooklyn and The Danish Girl share the floor. While singled out for special personal attention as Outstanding British Writer, Director Or Producer are Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Debbie Tucker (Second Coming), Stephen Fingleton (The Survivalist), Sean McAllister and Elhum Shakerifar (A Syrian Love Story), and Naji Abu Nowa and Rupert Lloyd (Theeb).
